I took a break from the gym for the last 2-1/2 months for a couple of reasons. First off, I decided to let my membership to the pricey gym lapse. I found a less expensive gym and worked out there for the first time this evening and it is awesome. I'm glad I made the change. New year, new gym, new fitness goals. I started slow and easy on the treadmill and accomplished my usual 45-minute walk-run.
I started running in high school and I never enjoyed it. I felt it was such a drudgery but like all teenage girls, I was always concerned about my appearance and I ran to lose weight. I stopped running after high school. 2021 was the first year that I started running again (running is a misnomer, I crawled). Because I am impatient and ambitious by nature when it comes to goal setting and physical fitness, my first run in years was an extremely hilly 5K. I showed up at the race unprepared, untrained, and cocky. When I realized I hadn’t even hit the 1 mile marker and my feet were already numb and I wanted to die, I decided to look for one of the many golf carts that were transported other like me who chose not to continue the race. There were none to be found so I kept walking hoping one would come by soon. I then saw the 2 mile marker and realized I was barely halfway through it and I could still walk. I decided to forego the golf cart that had just past me.
I made it to the end and there were still so many people behind me. I had thought I’d be the last to finish. I survived and got the T-shirt I was promised. That started my extremely bumpy road to achieving my fittest self. I’m not even a quarter of the way through this.
So much gets in the way of my attempts at a fitness routine. That’s the challenge. Consistency is key and I very often suck at consistency. It’s partly because of my ADHD, being on the spectrum, and just being flaky about strenuous efforts.
I’m not giving up. I’m my best and worst cheerleader, but I have so many friends and social media buddies who are a wonderful support system. I’m continuing my journey. I know it’s a bumpy road, but it’s also a miraculous journey.
